See some photos of shrines created by participating Centres and individuals on FWBO Photos.

June 20–27th sees more than 40 Buddhist Centres in four continents across the world joining together for the first-ever FWBO International Urban Retreat. In addition there’ll be many more people participating via Facebook: you’re welcome to join in the Retreat either on-line or at one of our participating Centres.

To help us appreciate the internationality of the retreat, we’re posting a number of talks and photos from participants. There’s people from around the world talking about what their lives are like and how they personally practice; also photos of some shrines from our Centres. You’ll find both these on our Talks and Resources page, we’ll be adding more during the week of the retreat so check back often! There’s already personal talks uploaded from India, Australia, Germany, and Britain.

Life with Full Attention

A major theme of the retreat is “Life with Full Attention” — i.e. living with more mindfulness and aliveness in day-to-day life. Already on the ’Talks’ page is a great video from Maitreyabandhu, author of a book of the same title (published by Windhorse Publications in July).

What’s an Urban Retreat?

On an ‘urban retreats’ you carry on living and working in your normal circumstances, but with a difference...

  • Gain confidence in your practice... the urban retreat shows you how you can create positive states of mind in the midst of everyday life.
  • Go deeper... link-up with other people at your Centre and help each other to practice more intensively for a week.
  • Be inspired... you’ll be part of an international event, practising with people from the FWBO all over the world.

Two Ways to Join in

FWBO Centres all over the world are taking part; you can see a list of participating Buddhist Centres here. We recommend that if you can, you do the urban retreat at your local Centre because it’ll give you much better “real life” support and contact with other people doing the retreat.

But if you don’t live near a participating Centre, you’re still welcome — we’re running an online version of the Urban Retreat via a series of Facebook events; click here to go to the Introductory event. There you’ll find full instructions for how to participate online. (If you’re not already registered on Facebook, you will need to sign up before you can access the urban retreat).
